The Kinnickinnic River (KK River) flows 2.8 miles through several communities in the City of Milwaukee.  One of the goals of the KK Project includes, involvment by citizens and other stakeholders from these neighborhoods to share their needs and perceptions of the KK River. To achieve this goal, we are giving these residents the opportunity to share their ideas, concerns, and unique neighborhood attributes with the members of the KK Project through participation in focus groups.

We are currently conducting focus groups in Bay View and Lincoln Village neighborhoods.  Since October 2004, several focus groups meetings have successfully convened in English and Spanish.  More maybe scheduled throughout Spring.  Thank you to those who have participated.

Some community perceptions of the river:

  • “The lake has always been the cherished thing, and the river has always been the backdrop to all the factories.”
  • “Before it was concreted, as kids we used to hunt for crayfish….”
  • “…in the last 10 to 15 years, the banks along that river are home to 24 or 30 crime scenes, some of them fatalities.”
  • “…this river has a lot of potential…”

  • “River?  What river?”
