The School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS) offers a graduate program of studies providing students with advanced training and education in four areas: Freshwater Systems; Human and Ecosystem Health; Freshwater Technology; and Freshwater Economics, Policy and Management. Each of these focus areas is interrelated with the others, and includes biologic, physical, technologic and policy aspects of freshwater.

The Research Experience for Undergraduates program at the Center for Great Lakes Studies at the Great Lakes WATER Institute has provided a well-rounded, diversifying experience for a dozen students per year on average. The degree of field research opportunity is great, and the integration of this work with academic and social aspects of science life has been fruitful.

Public outreach and education is a vital component of the mission of the Great Lakes WATER Institute. WATER Institute researchers and scientists appear regularly at public educational events, and are quoted extensively in the local, regional, national, and international media.
